What does chess mean to you?

20/03/2007

“Chess is my life, but my life is not chess.” (Anatoly Karpov)

Some would say a sport of mind, some others would say that our life is a chess game, and many of us think of chess as two people concentrating to a piece of wooden board with 64 squares. Magnificent some would say. Twice the sphinx in front of you in a deep silence. For the un-initiated many of this world, is like a ritual.

The Battle is over, 3 more games to go

06/03/2007

Saturday 3rd of March 2007, Share Dimension Groningen surpassed HSG Hilversum with 6 ½ - 3 ½ . Already old news… but we were so glad to read this information on various other websites and on television.

Not called “The battle of champions” for nothing, the participation of the World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, European Champion 2005 Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu, and German Champion Arkadij Naiditsch next to the best Dutch players with Share Dimension or HSG teams, made it a success..

Share Dimension Groningen played Saturday against ESGOO of Enschede in the national Dutch competition. Our team scored a good 7 ½ to 2 ½ win, which establishes Share Dimension as a strong candidate for winning the competition.

Grand Master Ivanchuk visited Share Dimensions’s offices the next day and was kind enough to give us an in-depth analysis of his game against Oscar Lemmers of ESGOO.
Vassily was very open with his comments and the annotations are truly a chess lesson for every one to follow.

Other Grand Masters, including Sergey Rublevsky, Ivan Sokolov, Tea Lanchava and Daan Brandenburg have also given extensive comments on their corresponding games. We invite you all to follow them on Round 5.

The Green Cathedral

12/11/2006

Essent Tournament Hoogeveen - a splendid event

03/11/2006

Almost everybody will remember this year´s edition of the Essent Tournament in Hoogeveen as the absolute highlight in the history of this event. I mean, what more can a spectator ask for? The best players ever in the Crown Group (Topalov, Mamedyarov, Polgar and Sokolov), great fighting spirit and no boring draws! Sounds like the perfect tournament, but as I already said: not for everyone.

Kramnik wins world chess title

13/10/2006

Russian Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik overpowered Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in a series of timed tiebreak matches to win the World Chess Championship in Elista.

Chess Dimension has followed all of the games in this championship, puzzled with all the issues around those games, and we are happy to see that our team member has won the undisputed championship.

Congratulations to Vladimir from all of us here at Chess Dimension and the Groningen Chess Club, both for the victory, and for continuing to play under adverse conditions. The entire sport has emerged victorious as a result.

Daan Brandenburg live!

29/09/2006

Our October match will be at and against Amstelveen(zukertort). Daan Brandenburg will be away that date because of an important youth championship. Raymonde de Rooy of Amstelveen was so friendly to play his game with Daan tonight. Not just that, the opponents also agreed to allow us to broadcast the event for our Internet and Groningen audience. Writing this (after move 16) we already know that it is a great tactical match and we advise you to follow it live. Follow the game on link on competition, round 2. Enjoy.

Vladimir Kramnik's battle for the world title (Elista 2006)

26/09/2006

Of course the whole chess community is already aware of the fact that our star, Vladimir Kramnik, is currently playing Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in a match for the World Title. The match is being played in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia (yep, FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s home base). With Vladimir and two other Share Dimension players on his team of seconds (Sergey Rublevsky and Alexander Motylev), it would be a shame if we couldn’t bring you the news here on our website. Sure, there are a lot of other sites bringing the match as well, but we felt obliged to show that the whole Share Dimension team is with our star in his battle for the World Championship 2006.

We will bring you the games live. Comments and analyses by strong grandmasters will be added later, so please check this page regularly for updates.

Close call...

23/09/2006

Well! We, and many others following this competition, expected a 7-3 or 8-2 shellacking of the Utrecht team...but it did not happen. On the contrary, it was a very hard-fought match that, after a lot of sweat, local matador Yge Visser won the victory for us, 5.5 - 4.5. He played a very nice, illustrative Closed Sicilian that finished in a rook and pawn ending. This game was really one to replay.

Sergey Tiviakov and Jan Werle were the other winning Groningen players. Remarkable, isn't it? In the end the wins came from the locals and not from our visiting stars. That is chess; sometimes these things happen. The 2 losses were Baramidze, who blundered against van Beek in a quiet position, and Erik Hoeksema, in a tough French battle on board 10. All the other games ended in draws, including the game between Smerdon and Ivanchuk on board one. That game was illustrative of the fighting spirit of the visiting Utrecht team. Our highest respect goes to them, but we are happy to keep the first match points in Groningen.

Games broadcasted live!

22/09/2006

Share Dimension Groningen games will be broadcast live during home matches, starting tomorrow (Saturday 23rd) against Utrecht. The broadcast will start at 1 o’clock. Our guest IM Tea Lanchava, also part of our first team selection, will guide you through the games.

Also, this Saturday afternoon our selection’s number 1, Vladimir Kramnik, will be busy with chess ‘somewhere else’. He will play the first game in his world championship match against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria. We will, of course, keep you posted and follow that ‘Battle of Titans’ as well. The championship match is even a bit more ‘Share Dimension Groningen’ than you might think: 2 other Groningen players, Sergey Rublevsky and Alexander Motylev, will be part of Kramnik’s team of seconds.

And the strengthening of our team continues….

20/09/2006

As indicated one month ago in our official press release, Share Dimension Groningen aims to become a leading force within the Dutch master class. For that purpose our sponsor, Share Dimension (www.sharedimension.com), enabled the team to hire world class players like Vladimir Kramnik, Dieter-Liviu Nisipeanu, Alexandr Motylev and Arkadij Naiditsch. But our ambitions reach further than ‘just’ becoming a leading force within the Netherlands.
